5a special friend

By Barb

From a opening judgment Mrya Stephens' uninformed descriptions of a events, a settings and a characters keeps we reading. we felt like we was spending time with a friend, whose past we had not known. Sarah Jane is a lady who has gifted most tragedy though whose wish never faded. Rather than give adult and censure others she accepts what has happened and takes shortcoming for her possess happiness. She is a indication for those who have felt like they were a victim. A book that is tough to put down. When Never Really Aloneit ends we glory with a characters.

5Took me by surprise...

By Sean O'Connell

Never Really Alone took me by warn and to a land we saw clearly by someone else's eyes. Remarkable déjà vu for a place I'd never been, though famous during once. As so mostly happens, a pacific complacency of childhood is followed by a terrible extremes that life can bring. Lovely, musical during times, this novel is fiction, though full of people and places, sights and sounds so evident that you'll swear we know them, have been there, have tasted that. When we examination we wish to be mislaid in a universe that creates me feel something strongly, good or bad, humorous or terrifying. Stephen's book will take we on a tour about adore that touches all a bases and brings we behind full circle. Highly recommended.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Art-movie enchantress Delphine Seyrig (Last Year during Marienbad) slinks by a plush Eurotrash settings as a eternal Elizabeth Bathory, Vampire Countess, in Harry Kümel's teenager Dutch classical of lesbian erotic-gothic. Blood mingles with H2O during a languorous showering scenes. Set during an upper-crust strand resort, a 1971 film recounts Bathory's tract to reinstate her stream join (Andrea Rau) with a fresher specimen, an abused newlywed whose heartless immature father is an nuisance watchful to be eliminated. Although both a bi-sex and a neck-biting assault are tame by today's standards, a film has a graceful, gliding clarity of gait that gets underneath your skin; something unspeakably eccentric always seems to be only about to happen. It never utterly does, though a mood lingers. See it with someone we love--or would like to. --David Chute

5Brilliant vampire flick

By Jeffrey Leach

Since I've been examination a ton of Eurohorror classics lately, now is as good as a time as any to contend a few difference about "Daughters of Darkness." we finished a vouch some time ago to omit vampire films as a ubiquitous rule. It's not that we strongly dislike all vampire films, mind you, yet we usually feel like a genre has been finished to genocide over a years. How many versions of Dracula can we watch before your eyes start rolling over a predictability of it all? The plots are all radically a same, right? You've got a requisite virgin, a hastily immature lad, a wizened vampire hunter, and good aged Drac himself ambling around in a dim harassing a others. A garland of people tumble chase to a vampire, a hunter teams adult with a immature masculine in an bid to save a immature girl, and a seductiveness by a aged ticker flattering many wraps a whole thing up. Well, a bit of knowledge reveals utterly a few films that play around with this attempted and loyal formula. One approach to accomplish something different, if these European flicks are any indication, is to punch adult a record with a inexhaustible assisting of unclothed flesh. There's zero like a garland of gals trooping around in divulgence outfits, or no outfits during all, to perk adult a dull aged Stoker legend. And if we can make a conduct vampire a woman, that positively can't harm either. Welcome to "Daughters of Darkness."

Something uncanny and smashing is going on in this movie, yet we have to wait awhile to see it. The design starts out by display us dual creatively married lovebirds, Valerie (Danielle Ouimet) and Stefan (John Karlen), streamer to a European seashore on a train. Ostensibly, a dual married in tip and are now going to conduct over to England to accommodate Stefan's determined mother. Valerie worries possibly a lady (ha!) will accept her given Stefan creates it extravagantly transparent that his dear mom is utterly picky about her son's girlfriends. Stefan assures Valerie all will go well, yet it shortly becomes apparent that he isn't hurrying to get to England. While watchful for a boat that will take them home, a dual check into a massively creepy hotel on a coast. No other guest are staying in a building given it's out of season, so Valerie and Stefan have a pleasing building all to themselves. That is until Countess Elizabeth Bathory (Delphine Seyrig) and her pleasing messenger Ilona (Andrea Rau) arrive on a stage in a selected automobile. Most of us are wakeful that Elizabeth Bathory was a scandalous sixteenth century Hungarian peeress who presumably kept herself evermore immature by showering in vats filled with a blood of immature maidens. Unfortunately, Valerie and Stefan don't make a connection.

Still, a newlyweds grow increasingly wakeful that something isn't right with a pleasing countess. First, it's rather peculiar that a hotel manager claims that he remembers Countess Elizabeth display adult during a hotel scarcely fifty years before looking accurately as she does now. Second, she's officious creepy. There's something dim behind her horrific laugh that creates we wish to scream. Second, a Countess Elizabeth takes an implausible seductiveness in a activities of a couple. She always seems to seem whenever Stefan and Valerie leave their room, grinning that terrible laugh and cooing like a cat over a dual newlyweds. Bathory seems to have an eye for a pleasing Valerie, too, that creates clarity when we learn accurately because Ilona follows her around like a puppy. It turns out story finished a mistake about a blood vats, not noticing or refusing to record that Bathory was unequivocally a vampire with a gusto for immature gals. She's roamed Europe for over 3 hundred years personification a same bloody game, a diversion that now threatens to slice detached perpetually this untimely couple. In no time during all, Elizabeth manages to expostulate a crowd between a Stefan and Valerie, partisan a latter to her parched cause, and wreak a whole heck of a lot of massacre in a hotel.

You usually gotta adore this film. "Daughters of Darkness" is one of a best vampire films we have ever seen for a crowd of reasons. The primary reason a design succeeds is due to a extraordinary talents of Delphine Seyrig. Who is this lively lady and where has she been all my life? we adore this lady! She manages to make her impression insanely beautiful and metaphysically scary during a same time. She slinks around in shimmering outfits dropping divulgence comments, tells horribly bloody stories, winks, and grins with a biggest of ease. And her predestine during a finish of a film is hideous and disturbing. Just as good as Seyrig is a rough atmosphere of a hotel and a barren surroundings. Characters pierce around outward underneath cloudy skies and by pouring rain. Forests circuitously are unenlightened and spooky. Every set square seems to telegram a clarity of imminent doom for a film's participants. Finally, we simply won't trust your eyes when Stefan calls his mom on a phone. What was executive Harry Kumel meditative here? What an impossibly weird stage to insert into a picture! Oh man, we usually won't clarity a stupidity of it!

"Daughters of Darkness" deserves 5 stars for a extraordinary performances and over a tip antics. we can't appreciate Blue Underground adequate for releasing this value on DVD. While a imitation send spasmodic suffers from some teenager blemishes and vanishing colors, many of a film looks great. Extras embody dual explanation tracks, radio spots, a trailer, stills, and an talk with Andrea Rau. Run, don't walk, to collect adult a duplicate of this underrated gem.

5Top-notch Euro Horror

By Timothy Ramzyk

The idea of "vampirism" has always had ties to dim and banned sides of tellurian sexuality, and has served as embellishment for homosexuality, nymphomania, and maochism. The passionate series of late 60's and early 70's constructed a brood of erotic, "lesbian" vampire films, in that their creators were means to graphically feat all demeanour of passionate taboos that had usually been hinted during previously. DVDs have given us a smashing cross-section of these banned fruits from Jess Franco's unusual Vampiros Lesbos to a surreal-dreamy accoutrements of Jean Rollin's Shiver Of The Vampires, yet Daughter's of Darkness is for many (myself included) is a cream of a crop.

Daughter's is kind of a hybrid between Sheridan Fornau's often-filmed vampire story, Carmilla, and a many legends and exploits of real-life "vampire" Elizabeth Bathory. Brought into a present, a film starts with a attainment of dual newlyweds, Stephan & Valerie (John Karlen & Danielle Quimet), to a murky and mostly forlorn beachfront hotel in Belgium. From a conflict we observe all is not right with this union, Stephan refuses to tell his "mother" of their matrimony and is divulgence an detached and sadistic temperament, that Valerie mournfully tolerates. Out of a night arrives a Countess Elizabeth Bathory (Delphine Seyrig) and her moist companion/accomplice Ilona (Andrea Rau). The Countess takes an immediate, carnal seductiveness in a immature newlyweds, and generally in Valerie. Meanwhile there seems to be a unreasonable of murders in a circuitously villages in that a immature womanlike victims have been emptied of all their blood. Before prolonged a countess and her demure messenger have seduced a uneasy newlyweds, and this is where a fun begins.

Though many amorous vampire films of a time exaggerate delicious visuals & thriving nudity, executive Harry Kummel clearly meant Daughters of Darkness to be some-more than a thinly potential soft-core "art film". Not that it's reduction these elements, Daughters' is utterly explicit, yet it's also a worldly and rarely styled fear film laced with bewildering moments of black-comedy. In short, it's delightfully European.

As a time-honoured and decadent Elizabeth Bathory, Euro-star Delphine Seryig is yet peer. More mostly than not, womanlike erotic-vampires are portrayed as baleful, reluctant victims of their possess desires, yet not Elisabeth. The Countess takes good honour in her wickedness, and done-up like a thirties Marline Dietrich, Seyrig is plausible and amusing, yet never trite as she gleefully corrupts all that she touches.

Blue Underground's anamorphic send of Daughters is a immeasurable alleviation over a early Anchor Bay edition. Though utilizing a same source, Blue Undergrounds mastering is sharper, a colors are some-more fast and it's giveaway of a draining and artifacts that disease a prior release. It still contains a explanation lane with masculine lead John Karlen, yet raises a stakes severely with an additional explanation lane with executive Harry Kumel, an onscreen talk with singer Andrea Rau, an glorious melodramatic trailer, radio spots, and a print and still gallery. Priced during $20 (or less) this is an essential up-grade for Euro-horror fans and an glorious entrance for a Euro-curious.

5A MUST for a film library of any critical fear film fan

By Dean Sliger

This is one of those cinema from a days when internal stations ran fear cinema on Saturday afternoons, stations that -- alas! -- have given aligned with pretender networks and now run infomercials all day. Mostly they'd run a good films from Hammer Studios, a Japanese beast cinema like "Godzilla," and, of course, a '50s B-movies like "Them." Every now and then, though, they'd uncover this truly creepy small gem. Now, of course, as an adult we commend this as an 'Art Film' yet afterwards it was usually eerie, creepy, and totally opposite -- generally when compared to a standard vampire and other beast cinema where a favourite gets a lady and a beast gets killed/destroyed. A fear film finished as an art film, there's a lot going on that a spectator possibly has to guess, assume, or be left wondering about. In that sense, "Daughters of Darkness" foreshadows a complicated Japanese fear films like "Ringu" or "Uzumaki" where you're left with unanswered questions, a kind that make we check to make certain a doors are locked. Blue Underground did a illusory pursuit with this DVD transfer, and it's good to be means to see this film in a entirety instead of edited for TV. The usually thing blank is Delphine Seyrig singing a pretension thesis during a commencement of a film ("...Don't let a object find you, or we might blur and die."). Where'd that go?

3It's fine, usually know what you're getting

By Sean R. Mclean

I have one of these and overtly I'm happy with it. There are lots of caveats so know what you're removing into. Historically this has a various of Android that cripples a app store into regulating AppLib. AppLib is junk. The volume of RAM is low, a processor is slow, and a shade is resistive that means we have to daub during it some-more than swiping a finger. I'm a sum geek so we mind nothing of this.

Here are some things it is unequivocally good at:
* elementary web browsing around wifi
* elementary SMTP/POP/IMAP email
* pinball, no really! this is a scream with pinball.
* pictures
* _some_ videos (I have to twiddle utterly a bit with a encoder for it to be serviceable and even afterwards that's iffy)
* youtube: somehow it's good during this. No thought why.
* impressing people: folks ask me how we like it and we straightforwardly contend "It's horrible! we adore it!" afterwards we get to explain a hackery. This is always fun, again see my geek criticism above. At events like DefCon we totally didn't mind handing it to a foreigner to goofus around with since we knew we could reflash it if he did something naughty. No biggie.
* a micro SD label is removable. This is freaking genius. Out of space on your iPad? Sorry tough luck. Out of space on your COBY? implement a new (and ridiculously cheap) micro SD card.
* it is superb as a multifunction Kindle (Fire eat your heart out). This is my primary use for a gizmo.

some things it's unequivocally bad at:
* it has a unequivocally tiny volume of RAM so when it caches apps anything opening complete suffers... so don't design most opening for mp3 playback or infrequently movies.
* For Kindle etc we will substantially have to base it and refurbish a image. I'm a sum geek so this was fun for me. If this isn't your bag afterwards don't go there.
* Did we discuss that AppLib is junk?
* Sometimes it usually conks out and reboots. Considering how most I've hacked during it we usually kind of giggle and let it restart. See my geek criticism above.
* impressing people: come on, this isn't an iPad or a Samsung Galaxy. But hey we spent around $100 so while they have their spiffy jigger we also have a automobile remuneration left over. And maybe coffee.
* a headphones are laughably poor. chuck these out on opening.
* Facebook works poorly. No biggie, we're already seeking for a lot out of a small man and we unequivocally don't mind this.

1Horrible

By disappointed

I'm a PhD tyro who is meddlesome in a theme and wanted to do some credentials reading when we had a chance. we purchased a Kindle ebook given it seemed ideal -- cheap, unstable reading. After receiving a book, we am very, really disappointed. The content is illegible. This is not a initial time we have had problems with Amazon per their electronic book offerings... though it will be a last.

The formula are horrible. The publisher (Sage) apparently only converted this to a Amazon book format though any regard for legibility or quality. The outcome is that all of a equations are blurry, and a subscripts and superscripts are totally illegible.

There are a series of problems with a Kindle book that conjunction Amazon, nor a strange publisher, seem to caring about.

First, a equations in a content are too tiny to read. Additionally, they are contained in a content as images, so even if one tries to wizz in on an equation, we simply get a incomparable becloud image. (Hint: a publisher should use SVG - Scalable Vector Graphics and not a lossy picture record format that they chose to use.) The distance of a equations, that are extrinsic in a content as images, are a smallest rise distance possible, so even when we boost a rise size, a equations sojourn during a smaller distance (since they are prisoner as images).

In terms of a text, well, here too a Sage book falls flat. While Sage books are generally high peculiarity it is mostly strike and skip as to either a content of a pamphlet is a silken review (whether or not it is an easy review is another matter!). The content altogether is uninspiring though informative... however, given a problems with a equations only mentioned, there is no indicate in purchasing a book.

Do yourself a foster and take out any Sage books from a library. Don't worry with shopping this.

By a approach -- a representation chronicle of this book does not enclose any equations. It would have been good if it did!

5A Classic Late 60's Hippy/Biker Movie Worth Owning!

By highway_star

"Easy Rider" destined by Dennis Hopper, constructed by Peter Fonda and created by Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper and Terry Southern was a low bill film ($340 grand) that surprisingly became a box bureau smash. The story is about dual hippys (Fonda & Hopper) who buy choppers with income they've gotten from a drug deal. They float cranky nation streamer to Louisianna (to Mardi Gras) and on their approach assembly opposite people, visiting a kibbutz of hippys, finale adult in jail, going to a brothel, holding poison etc. The finale was unfortunate in 1969 and still is, even in these days of uninterrupted assault in a country. This 35th Anniversary Edition is matching to a unchanging dvd chronicle of "Easy Rider" with a accurate same reward element "The Making-Of Documentary "Easy Rider: Shaking The Cage" (feat. interviews with Fonda, Hopper, etc.) and an audio explanation by Dennis Hopper and prolongation notes. The bonuses for this 35th Anniversary Edition are a cd that includes 8 songs (do not upset this cd with a tangible "Easy Rider Soundtrack" as it is not). The songs are "Born To Be Wild" - Steppenwolf, "The Weight" - Smith, "Nights In White Satin" - The Moody Blues, "Wasn't Born To Follow" - The Byrds, "San Francisco Nights" - Eric Burden And The Animals, "The Pusher" - Steppenwolf, "It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)" - Roger McGuinn and "Get Together" - The Youngbloods. The 80 page book "Easy Rider" by Lee Hill is engaging and includes all you'll ever wish to know about a film. The bottom line is, if we already possess a unchanging dvd of "Easy Rider" I'd pass on this 35th Anniversary Edition. Of course, if we don't possess this classical film it might be value a additional income for a reward cd and book.

5"Helmut? Oh, we got a helmut..."

Easy Rider is a truly landmark film in a loyal clarity of a definition of a term. Produced on a unequivocally low bill and set in a late 60's it was, in my opinion, a initial film to unequivocally constraint a utterly engaging impulse in time. While many films arrange of used a thought of a late 60's, drugs, sex, rebellion, idealism, as a means to make money, this seemed unequivocally a initial film to accurately simulate a picturesque picture of a time duration with an steadfast eye.

Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper play Wyatt, or Captain America, and Billy, dual giveaway form spirits who, after a creation utterly a bit of income by a sale of drugs, confirm to strike a highway and expostulate cranky nation to Mardi Gras. Along a way, they collect adult George Hanson, a southern lawyer, played by Jack Nicholson.

While examination this movie, we might get a clarity that it is arrange of a western, with a western landscapes and a categorical characters roving 'iron' horses. This was a goal of a filmmakers, generally a director, Dennis Hopper. One of my favorite scenes was during a beginning, right before Wyatt and Billy are about to embark on their trip, Wyatt removes his watch and throws it on a ground. This symbolized a clarity of throwing off a constraints of a aged universe and an bid to welcome loyal freedom, if there is such a thing.

Nicholson tends to take a scenes he is in, and gives a utterly smashing square about what leisure is, and because people are so fearful of it. He arrange of represented to me one who has been fed many misconceptions about a people and transformation Wyatt and Billy represent, though once in their company, finds that most of what he has been told might not be true. A arrange of particular held between a generations.

The film is dated, though that didn't detract anything for me. The usually stage we unequivocally didn't caring for was when Wyatt, Billy, Mary (Toni Basil), and Karen (Karen Black) dump poison in a Louisiana tomb and ensue to outing for an extended duration of time.

Along with smashing performances, most credit contingency go to a cinematographer, as a landscapes are beautiful, generally a far-reaching shots of a western scenery. They are truly breathtaking. And a song used was unusually good, wise any stage and assisting to emanate a correct mood via a film.

The film presented here looks excellent, in anamorphic far-reaching screen, and includes a explanation by Dennis Hopper. Also enclosed is a smashing 'Making of' featurette called Easy Rider: Shaking a Cage that unequivocally helps to illustrate all that went into creation this film. The production, during time, mostly reflected a violent times of when a film was made, and helps to give some-more season to a movie, unequivocally enhancing a altogether effect. All in all, Easy Rider is a smashing cut of alien Hollywood that prisoner a loyal hint of an unusually violent time in America.

5The Death of The '60s

By Briggs May

The Plot: Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda are dual drug dealers from L.A. who get abounding offered coke to Phil Spector(imagine that...). They applaud by attack a highway on their choppers towards Mardi Gras. Among many of a kind Americans they run into along a approach is a one and usually Jack Nicholson, an alcoholic ACLU profession who helps them out of jail. In return, they confirm to take him to New Orleans with them and get him befuddled in a routine (the funniest stage in a movie--Nicholson offers an moving digression concerning supernatural intelligence). Enduring nuisance and abuse from a farming locals, they arrive during Mardi Gras. Tony Basil(!) is one of a hookers they dump poison with in a cemetery (an unsettling unusual method usually surpassed by a consummate of "2001: A Space Odyssey"). Sounds great, doesn't it? It is. Despite a flaws and shortcomings, this is an American classical not to be missed.

Any fan of eccentric films will venerate this film (check out "Midnight Cowboy", too, if we like this one). The behaving is bungled though a book is inspired, and a cinematography and soundtrack are terrific.

This film is a mystic tinge film, and a American Dream is a plant in a spotlight. It foreshadows a paranoia and feeling that would after curt a War On Drugs and, now, a War On Terror. Ironically, a alcoholic counsel played by Jack Nicholson is a usually chairman that has a transparent and solemn thought of what is going on, and he is fast silenced by a barbarous locals. The dual categorical characters themselves have a deceptive thought of it, though are too held adult in their possess hedonism to see it clearly. Near a finish of a film, Peter Fonda grimly concludes: "We blew it." Ouch--the law hurts; we wasn't even alive in a '60s and I'm still feeling it today.
